Ranches with Wolves is a nonprofit helping ranchers impacted by wolves through financial aid, advocacy, and education of the public.
“It is clear the scale of conflict between wolves and cattle is substantial, expanding, and costly to ranchers in terms of animal welfare, animal performance, and ranch profitability”
“Researchers at University of California, Davis estimate that the Beyem Seyo wolf pack’s reliance on livestock in Sierra Valley cost ranchers and the state at least $2.6 million over roughly six months in 2024. The pack killed at least 92 calves and cows between late March and early October, resulting in about $235,000 in direct livestock losses. Additional confirmed kills could push that figure closer to $300,000.”
About Ranches with Wolves
Across the West, ranchers are facing losses both directly in the form of dead cattle, and indirectly through the stress of wolf presence. This organization was formed to help those affected through private fundraising where state programs funding falls short. Our mission is to share the real stories of rural families with a public that does not understand what life alongside these protected apex predators truly means. We also work to advocate policy reform, representing ranching operations in legislative programs to ensure their voices are heard and their livelihoods are protected.

In a recent UC Davis study it was found that a single wolf can cause between $69,000 and $162,000 in direct and indirect losses from lower pregnancy rates in cows and decreased weight gain in calves.
Total indirect losses are estimated between $1.4 million to $3.4 million depending on moderate or severe impacts from wolves.
